Time for Human Rights and Equality Budgeting

17 October 2013

Time for Human Rights & Equality Budgeting in Ireland:

An NGO Response to Budget 2014

Co-ordinated by PILA (Public Interest Law Alliance) & the Equality Budgeting Campaign

Chaired by Niall Crowley (equality consultant and former Equality Authority CEO), with individual contributions from:

  • Stephen Donnelly TD,
  • Dr. Liam Thornton (UCD),
  • Louise Bayliss (Equality Budgeting Campaign)
  • David Perry BL
  • & PILA representatives.

The event will bring together more than 40 organisations in an open forum environment to air opinions on human rights and equality approaches to budgetary decision making in the context of the decisions taken for Budget 2014. It will also include academics, politicians and representatives of state bodies.

Attendees will learn more about human rights/equality budgeting in the context of their particular work or areas of interest. It is particularly apt on the International Day of Eradication of Poverty, to discuss the implications of Budget 2014 in terms of the minimum standard needed to live in dignity.

The event will open with an address by the chair, Niall Crowley, followed by speaker interventions. PILA will then present the results from a survey conducted with all attending NGOS that collates their reactions to Budget 2014.

At the end of the debate, it is envisaged that the gathering will issue a civil society statement summarising the discussion, highlighting some of the worst affected groups from Budget 2014 and offering an alternative solution that takes a human rights and equality approach to the budget.

There will be a photo call at 4:15pm and press briefing at 4:30pm. Tea & coffee will be available.
