FLAC, ICCL and IPRT submission to List of Issues stage under ICCPR

11 January 2008

As a party to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Ireland is required to submit a periodic report to the Covenant's monitoring body, the UN Human Rights Committee every four years, detailing the administrative, legislative, judicial and other measures Ireland has taken to it is fulfilling its obligations under the Covenant. Ireland submitted its Third Periodic Report in February 2007 and this due to be examined by the Human Rights Committee in Geneva in July 2008. A Task Force from the Human Rights Committee will meet in March of this year to produce a List of Issues which will inform the Committee's examination of Ireland in the summer.

In conjunction with the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) and the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT)FLAC has made a submission to the Human Rights Committee to highlight priority areas of concern for the List of Issues stage. A detailed Shadow Report to Ireland's third periodic report is now being finalised by the three organisations and is due to be launched later this year.
