Moving out of Personal Debt: How to use the new legal infrastructure on personal debt and insolvency

16 May 2013

On Thursday 16 May, FLAC will host an information session on how to use the new legal infrastructure around personal debt and insolvency. The event will aim to provide an overview of the process of dealing with personal over-indebtedness in a structured way, based on the legal and administrative instruments available, from mortgage arrears to full bankruptcy. It will also analyse the current structures from a consumer perspective.

The information session will last from 3pm - 7pm (with registration from 2.30pm)

Videos and materials from the presentations will be available afterwards on the FLAC website.

Please note that we will not be able to address individual cases or situations at this session - it is purely for information purposes.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Lorcan O'Connor, Director, Insolvency Service of Ireland - An Introduction to the Personal Insolvency Act 2012 and the Insolvency Service
  • Christopher Lehane, Official Assignee in Bankruptcy - Where does Bankruptcy fit in?
  • Colette Bennett, Project Development Manager, MABS - Debt Relief Notices - How will they work?
  • Paul Joyce, Senior Policy Analyst, FLAC - The Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears 2013 and the Personal Insolvency Act
  • Tom Murray, Partner, Friel Stafford - The Personal Insolvency Practitioner's (PIP) perspective
  • Chair: Noeline Blackwell, FLAC Director General

To attend this event:

As an NGO, FLAC has to raise money for all its activities and relies on grants and donations to support its work. There is no set charge for this event, but if you are in a position to do so we would ask you to consider making a voluntary donation of €25, or whatever you can afford.

Pre-registration is essential and must be done using our online registration form.

  • A number of places have been reserved for FLAC volunteers, both those who volunteer at FLAC Centres and those on the PILA pro bono register. The session is primarily intended to give these volunteers an overview of the legal structures around debt. Please register here if you are a FLAC volunteer. CPD points will be available.
  • The session is also open to non-volunteers - both those who are personally affected by debt and those who are working to support over-indebted people. Please register here if you are not a FLAC volunteer.
