Review of Event
The 3rd Annual Dave Ellis Memorial Lecture was given by Dr Maurice Hayes at the Law Society of Ireland on Tuesday 1 December. Dr Hayes spoke on the theme of "Access to Justice" to a large gathering of FLAC supporters and family and friends of the late Dave Ellis, a community activist who dedicated his career to working with community groups in areas including welfare rights, legal aid, legal education and legal entitlements generally.
Dr Hayes' paper is available to download in Word format.
The evening also featured the launch of FLAC's online archive by journalist and broadcaster Colin Murphy. The archive will house audio and video coverage around FLAC's work. The first project unveiled was a podcast, 'Forty Years of FLAC', comprising interviews with FLAC founders, staff and volunteers from across the four decades of the organisation's existence.
Finally, the evening saw the awarding of FLAC's Thomas Addis Emmet Fellowship to law student Helen Nolan. Helen spent the past summer in Seattle studying international public interest law with the University of Washington and working on a pro bono project for a local public interest law NGO, Washington Appleseed.
Applications are now being accepted for next year's Fellowship competition - see the webpage for details.
