Becoming a Volunteer
Requirements and attributes of FLAC volunteers
We require volunteers who are qualified to practice law in Ireland. We will also consider practitioners qualified in other jurisdictions with up to date, relevant experience in Ireland.
Volunteers should have a commitment to social justice and the principle of access to justice. They should also have an understanding of the community sector.
Other important attributes include:
- a commitment to professionalism and the principles and obligations of volunteering ;
- an understanding of, or willingness to learn, the legal areas in which the legal centre provides advice and assistance to the community;
- an ability to work as part of a team;
- reliability and the ability to attend the centre on scheduled dates;
- tolerance and patience in different or challenging situations;
- a willingness to empathise with clients who have disabilities, comprehension, communication or literacy difficulties, or substance abuse issues.
If you are interested in becoming a FLAC Legal Volunteer, please complete and return our Registration Form. You can also call us at 01-874 5690 and speak with FLAC's Centres Co-ordinator or e-mail us at volunteers@flac.ie.
Most FLAC Centres in the Dublin area are organised through our head office. Other centres are organised directly by the Citizens Information Centre (CIC) which hosts them. Once we have your completed registration form, we may contact you directly or forward your form to the relevant CIC.
All volunteers attend an induction meeting where they are briefed on the work in their particular centre and given information to assist them in their role. From time to time we also hold training sessions on areas of law relevant to the work of the centres, such as immigration, family and criminal law.
